Cider and Perry
Another year, another cider and perry bar with the largest selection anywhere in the country. The selection will be slightly smaller this year, with only 199 different types of cider and perry. 122 producers have been asked to supply, of which 25 are new to the festival. As you'll see, the bar will be longer, allowing us to start with slightly more variety. However, the system of holding back some stock for later in the festival will remain, and a selection of just over 40 products will not be put on sale until the Saturday session. These are marked prominently in the list below with a big red From Saturday.
Cider is fermented apple juice and perry is fermented pear juice. Depending on the style, cider can be made from a mixture of dessert apple varieties and cooking apple varieties, or from specialist cider apples. Cider apples are smaller and harder than cookers or eaters, but produce excellent juice for cidermaking. Perry is often made from specialist perry pear varieties - unsuitable for eating - but eating varieties have been known to be included.
Ciders and perries are usually made from blends of many different apple or pear varieties, but you will see some which use a single variety, indicated by 'SV'. Blends tend to produce a more rounded drink by mixing flavours from the different varieties, but there are some varieties which hold up well on their own, such as Kingston Black apples or Blakeney Red pears. See if you can spot some piders - made from a blend of apple and pear juices.
Cider Awards
Reading Beer and Cider Festival is again proud to be hosting CAMRA's National Cider and Perry Championships. This time, as well as the national awards, we are also running the South of England regional cider competition, covering over 30 cider producers from the east coast of Kent to Dorset, up to Buckinghamshire and everything in between. The regional winner will be announced on Friday afternoon and will go through into the national championship judging. The national champion ciders and perries will be announced at about 3.30pm on Saturday.
If you have some time free on Friday between 12 and 4pm then you can volunteer to take part in a judging panel. The only qualification is liking cider or perry. If you want to join in, go to the cider and perry bar and you'll be allocated to a panel and given a time for judging. Each panel takes about 45 minutes.
Once again we are lucky to have a number of local producers, who are all making their ciders and perries within 25 miles of Reading. These are indicated with green highlighting in the list below. Similarly, perries are highlighted with a yellow background to help you spot them. The cask end labels also distinguish between cider and perry - green for cider and yellow for perry.
We even have a cider for the royal wedding, made by local producer Tim Wale of Tutts Clump.
If you're not sure where to start with such a range and choice, talk to the volunteer bar staff, who'll be happy to advise.
